Mountains are part of Almata's life. Indeed you can easily orient looking on mountains, you can get there and breath in fresh air. In 2 weeks we managed to get to mountains 2 times. First we travelled to Medeo and Chimbulak. Medeo is famous with its longest working ice arena. It starts working at September and ends next year July. Medeo is a major tourist attraction and also wedders come there as well. We could find a van driving tourists up to Chimbulak for a modest price easily. After 15 minutes of driving on the narrow and step mountain roads we arrived to Chimbulak.
It is a mountain skiers paradise in the winter. Now at summer time the funiculers still functioned and a plenty of people were raising up to mountains to try mountain breath and to let their eyes rest from busy city. The funiculers were organizaed in few steps. When you get to intermediate station you pay some more tenge and proceed up.
Alternatively if you didn't want to go to far you could stay at the intermediate altitude. Near station there was a cafe made in traditional Kahazah "urta". It was unfortunately closed. We found also interesting tree with a bunch of bands tied on it. I believe this is related to a local custom to leave something so that you would return again to the place. We did not proceed further to the top and returned this time as the van which brought us to Chimbulak was waiting. Our next encounter with the mountains was when our friends suggested us to hike around Almaty mountains.
So we 3 girls and 2 guys went out on a sunny Sunday. From start we passed a mountain village, we did not see it's dwellers but saw few caws which were finding their way to underfeet food. We then passed a small source of water.
It was seemingly untidy - just water pouring from a dirty steel tube. But what a water was that! Very tasty and refreshing. And amazingly, crystal clear. It was a hot day so we exhausted our water supplies and refilled our bottles from this source. Then we proceeded climbing. Steep elevation was gradually exhausting feminine part of our little expedition yet we were daringly climbing up and up. There was incoming traffic some folks were traveling in an opposite direction. Interestingly, everybody we met was saying "Hi" or "Good day". After some time we met a lady who was gathering herbs. We went togather for sometime further and had an interesting conversation about "space, universe and everything". In fact I was once more surprised who easy are people in Khazakhstan with each other. The lady who new us for just few minutes was very open and interesting intrelocutor. We were speaking about her family and about herbs and about the mountains and life. The mountain views were really beautiful. It is difficult to describe how the mountains affect the spirit of person. You feel free and healthy. Despite of walking many miles, you don't feel tired and you can walk many more.We passed few sources and little rivers and we were drinking water from those. And then at the end of our walk we met... you want believe, the guys who were playing RPG - role playing game. With wooden swords and medieval costumes. Just in the mountains, without any restrictions.
We returned from the mountains hike in the late evening...It was probably the most interesting and most amazing experience.

While Almaty is not something out of ordinary from city planning and architecture you can easily find there few interesting views and original buildings. Some of them originate
However there are new ones which are being built in quite an American downtown style and there are multi-million villas at the near mountain district. This probably reflects dissection of the society to rich and poor. So to say Marx in action
